The World Health Organization warned on Wednesday that the cholera epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is still expanding, with more than 125,000 suspected cases reported between January 2025 and the end of September 2026.

Health officials also recorded 3,644 suspected deaths in the same period, underscoring the severity of the outbreak in a country already battling other public health challenges.

Cholera, a water‑borne disease that can cause severe dehydration and death if untreated, has been a persistent threat in the DRC’s remote regions where access to clean water and sanitation is limited.

The WHO’s latest figures highlight the need for continued vaccination campaigns, improved water and hygiene infrastructure, and strengthened surveillance to curb the spread of the disease.

While the DRC remains focused on controlling other outbreaks, the cholera figures serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing public health risks faced by the country’s population.
