CNN, MS NOW, and Politico have filed a lawsuit against the United States government, seeking to restore their journalists' access to the White House after their press credentials were revoked. The three media organizations announced the legal action on Monday, stating that they are challenging the administration's decision in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
Legal Challenge to Press Ban
The lawsuit follows President Donald Trump's announcement on Friday that the three outlets would be barred from the White House. The president accused the media organizations of publishing "FICTION and LIES" regarding him, his administration, and the United States. Following this declaration, the White House enforced the ban, with reporters from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico being turned away from the premises on Saturday.
In a joint statement issued on Monday, the organizations argued that the administration should not have the authority to determine what journalists report or publish. They noted that their credentials were confiscated without prior notice or due process, citing objections to their reporting as the primary reason for the revocation.
“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the organizations said.
The media groups emphasized that the revocation of credentials poses a significant threat to press freedom. They warned that if left unchallenged, the action undermines the public's right to independent journalism free from government interference.
The lawsuit was filed two days after the initial implementation of the ban, during which the journalists' press passes were taken by administration officials. The organizations are asking the court to restore their access and have indicated that emergency proceedings could take place as early as this week.
