Labour Party presidential candidate and former Anambra governor Peter Obi said he has no quarrel with Governor Charles Soludo over the state’s outstanding debt, clarifying that the financial facilities in question were taken during his own tenure.
Obi’s remarks come amid ongoing public discussion about Anambra’s debt profile, which has attracted scrutiny from both media and civil‑society groups. The southeastern Nigerian state has been working to manage borrowing that was incurred for infrastructure and development projects.
According to Obi, the facilities were legitimate development loans that were properly recorded and are now being handled by the current administration. He stressed that any remaining balances are a matter for the present government to address, not a point of contention between the two politicians.
Obi also urged that political rivalry should not hinder cooperation on fiscal matters, calling for continuity, transparency and a focus on the state’s economic wellbeing. He said constructive dialogue between former and current leaders is essential for effective debt management.
The statement arrives as Governor Soludo’s administration continues negotiations with creditors and implements reforms aimed at improving Anambra’s financial health, a priority for the state’s development agenda.
