Former President Olusegun Obasanjo criticised the flamboyant entertainer Charles Oputa – popularly known as Charly Boy – describing him as “jaga jaga,” while at the same time praising the late Justice Oputa, Charly Boy’s father, as a good man. The remarks were made during an interview on the programme “Curiosity Made Me Ask” hosted by Isbaeu.
Obasanjo said he was initially put off by Charly Boy’s appearance, asking, “Can you see a gentleman who dresses like a woman? A gentleman who dresses like a bush man? Charly Boy is too jaga jaga.” He added that the entertainer’s style left him with “no iota of regard or respect” when they first met.
“Justice Oputa was a great man, how I wish Charly Boy resembled him. That man was one of the few Nigerians that I respected when he was alive.”
The former president explained that his perception shifted after visiting Justice Oputa’s residence, which turned out to be Charly Boy’s home. He recalled noticing a motorcycle outside the house and then seeing how Charly Boy was caring for his father, which led him to “start changing my mind about Charly Boy.”
Obasanjo noted that until Justice Oputa’s death, Charly Boy “took perfect care of him” and behaved “like a good child,” underscoring a stark contrast between his view of the entertainer’s public persona and his private actions as a son.
