Two startups are developing a GPS‑free navigation package for small wheeled robots, a step that could make autonomous ground‑robot swarms viable in environments where satellite positioning is unavailable or unreliable.

The navigation system relies on inertial measurement units—accelerometers and gyroscopes—to continuously estimate a robot’s position and orientation without needing external signals. By fusing sensor data in real time, the package can keep track of movement even when the robot is out of sight of GPS satellites.

GPS‑free operation is especially valuable for indoor, underground or densely built‑up areas where satellite signals are blocked, as well as in contested settings where GPS jamming is a risk. Providing robots with self‑contained navigation therefore expands the range of tasks they can perform autonomously.

Potential applications span logistics, where swarms could move goods through warehouses, to defense and disaster‑response scenarios that demand rapid, coordinated movement across complex terrain without reliance on external infrastructure.

Both startups remain in the prototype stage, and further field testing will determine how accurately the inertial package can maintain position over time and whether it can scale to larger robot swarms.
