A 36‑year‑old British woman died off North Bimini in the Bahamas on Tuesday while trying to rescue her two sons after a strong current swept them away during a snorkeling outing.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the current pulled the boys from the water, but they were later rescued by authorities. The mother, whose identity has not been released, did not survive the incident.
Police confirmed that a formal investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
North Bimini, part of the Bahamian archipelago, is a popular spot for tourists who come to snorkel among its coral reefs. The islands attract many visitors each year, drawn by clear waters and abundant marine life.
Local officials regularly warn swimmers and snorkelers about the potential danger of sudden currents, urging the public to follow safety guidelines and to stay within designated areas.
