Brazil’s presidential election on Sunday, Oct. 6, failed to produce a majority winner, triggering a runoff scheduled for Oct. 25 between Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro and incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump, will challenge Lula, who is seeking a second term as the country’s head of state.
Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, will see its political direction decided in the upcoming second‑round vote.
Under Brazil’s electoral system, a candidate must secure more than 50 % of the vote in the first round to win outright; otherwise, the two highest‑placed candidates advance to a runoff.
The Oct. 25 runoff will determine which leader will steer Brazil’s economic and social policies for the next four years.
