The Bauchi State Sharia Commission summoned Islamic cleric Dahiru Abubakar on Wednesday after media reports claimed he had been removed as imam for allegedly campaigning for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re‑election.

Abubakar appeared before the commission at a meeting led by the Commander of Hisbah, Malam Muhammad Muhammad Bununu, who gave the cleric an opportunity to explain the allegations and to receive guidance on the need to exercise caution when mixing religious duties with political activities.

During the session, Abubakar said his earlier comments had been misrepresented. “I made the statement, but I never expected it to generate this kind of controversy. The mosque being discussed is not more than two prayer rows; it is a small mosque. It is not a Friday mosque, but some people across the world understood it to be a large Friday mosque,” he said.

“Stop spreading things I never said,” Abubakar warned, adding that the mosque had only seven regular worshippers who had removed him as imam and that the disagreement had since been resolved.

He apologized to those who had been offended by the misunderstanding, particularly those who believed he had been removed from a Juma’at mosque, and reaffirmed his support for Tinubu, stating he would continue to campaign for the president’s re‑election in 2027. Abubakar thanked the Sharia Commission for inviting him and for the advice offered, expressing regret over the confusion surrounding the size and status of the mosque.
