A Bauchi court has sentenced eight suspects to eight years’ imprisonment each for thuggery and disturbance of public peace in Unguwar Dim, a neighbourhood of the Bauchi metropolis.

Each defendant was also given the option of paying a fine of N370,000 to avoid incarceration.

The arrests followed a complaint lodged on 14 October by the Peace and Security Committee of Unguwar Dim, which alleged renewed thuggery in the area. Police operatives and committee members raided a suspected hoodlums’ hideout in the early hours of 15 October, arresting nine suspects.

During the raid, officers recovered a cache of weapons and contraband, including machetes, cutlasses, knives, sticks, illicit substances and other dangerous items.

Police spokesman SP Nafiu Habib said, “Eight of the suspects were charged to court after investigations. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were convicted and sentenced by the court.”

Commissioner of Police Sani‑Omolori Aliyu welcomed the judgment, describing it as the result of effective collaboration between the police and the community, and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling thuggery and other violent crimes in Bauchi State.
