An Australian soldier was killed and five other service members were injured during a training accident at the Mount Bundey training area, about 100 km south‑east of Darwin in the Northern Territory, on Monday, the Defence Department confirmed.
The Department said the fatality occurred during a routine exercise and that the next of kin of the deceased have been informed.
A statement released on Tuesday morning reiterated the incident, confirming the number of casualties and noting that the Defence Department was providing support to those affected.
Mount Bundey is a remote defence training facility used by the Australian Defence Force for live‑fire and other operational exercises, and it lies within the sparsely populated region surrounding Darwin.
The Defence Department did not disclose further details about the cause of the accident or any subsequent investigations.
