At least 139 migrants were reported dead and dozens remain missing after a small boat capsized off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday night or Friday morning.

The vessel was en route from Djibouti to Yemen when it overturned in the Red Sea, according to the IOM’s statement. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, though the exact time remains unclear.

More than 80 people survived the wreck, all of whom were Ethiopian nationals, the IOM added. The survivors were rescued by local authorities and taken to safety.

The tragedy highlights the perilous journeys that many migrants undertake across the Red Sea in search of a better life. The IOM is still working to locate the missing passengers and to provide assistance to the survivors.
