Arizona State University in Talks with Dave Hakstol for Men's Hockey Head Coach Role
Arizona State University's men's hockey program is set to undergo a potential revolution as the university is currently in discussions with the Colorado Avalanche's assistant coach, Dave Hakstol, to become the team's new head coach, according to ESPN.
Hakstol, a well-regarded figure in the world of ice hockey, has gained significant experience as an assistant coach with the Avalanche, a role he has held since 2019. This background could prove invaluable as he contemplates a transition into collegiate coaching.
If a deal is struck between ASU and Hakstol, it would mark a significant step forward for the university's hockey program, which currently competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Dave Hakstol would bring his expertise from the National Hockey League (NHL) to the Sun Devils.
The discussions between Arizona State and Hakstol have yet to reach a final agreement, but the talks have been ongoing for some time, suggesting that a deal may be imminent.
In a statement, Dave Hakstol expressed his interest in joining the ASU men's hockey program:
"I am excited about the opportunity to potentially join the Arizona State University men's hockey team and help elevate the program to new heights," Hakstol said.
ASU officials have also shown enthusiasm for the prospect of having Hakstol on board, indicating that the talks are progressing favorably:
"We are thrilled to be in discussions with Dave Hakstol, a highly respected figure in the hockey world, about joining our men's hockey program," said ASU Athletics Director Ray Anderson.
If a deal is struck, Hakstol would succeed current head coach, Rick Seeley, who has been leading the Sun Devils since 2016. Under his guidance, the team has experienced growth but has yet to make a significant impact in the WCHA.
Arizona State University is known for its commitment to interdisciplinary education and research, and the potential hiring of Hakstol aligns with this ethos, as his background in both collegiate and professional hockey would bring a unique perspective to the team.
A successful coaching career spanning over two decades, Dave Hakstol has previously coached the Philadelphia Flyers in the NHL and the University of North Dakota's men's hockey team. His extensive experience in the sport is expected to be a valuable asset for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State University and Dave Hakstol's potential appointment comes at a time when the university is aiming to elevate its athletics profile.
If a deal is finalized, ASU men's hockey would gain a coach with a proven track record of success. Hakstol led the University of North Dakota to the Frozen Four in 2017 and coached the Philadelphia Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2018.
A move to ASU would represent a new chapter for Hakstol, who has previously expressed interest in coaching at the collegiate level.
