The Nigerian Army has officially denied allegations of extortion following a viral video depicting an interaction at a checkpoint in Delta State. The 63 Brigade, which is headquartered in the region, issued a statement asserting that its troops acted professionally and in accordance with standard operating procedures during the incident.
The controversy arose after a video showing the encounter between soldiers and civilians at the checkpoint circulated widely on social media platforms. In the footage, which has drawn significant public attention, observers have accused military personnel of engaging in extortionate practices, prompting calls for an investigation into the conduct of the troops involved.
In response to the growing public outcry, the 63 Brigade clarified that the actions captured in the video did not constitute extortion. The military unit maintained that the personnel involved were performing their duties professionally while maintaining security at the designated checkpoint.
Delta State, located in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria, has been a focal point for security operations aimed at combating banditry and other criminal activities. The 63 Brigade plays a central role in these efforts, often establishing checkpoints to monitor movement and ensure public safety.
The denial by the military comes amid heightened scrutiny of security forces' conduct in the region. While the 63 Brigade stands by the professionalism of its troops, the viral nature of the video has intensified debate over the relationship between the military and local communities in Delta State.
Further details regarding the specific circumstances of the checkpoint incident, including the identities of the individuals involved and any subsequent internal reviews, were not elaborated upon in the initial denial.
