The All Progressives Congress (APC) issued a statement on Sunday condemning former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi – who is running as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice‑presidential candidate for the 2027 election – after he reportedly said he could not afford medication for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi, who died at age 89.
APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka began the statement by offering condolences to Amaechi and his family, but quickly turned to a critique of the former governor’s political record and personal finances. The party noted that Amaechi has held senior positions, including Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Governor of Rivers State and Minister of Transportation, before leaving public office three years ago.
“Rotimi Amaechi’s uncanny confessions must not be missed. First, he howled that he had become so broke and hungry that his wife was now feeding him. Now, he has stated that his inability to afford medications killed his mother at 89,”
The APC alleged that Amaechi “freeloaded at the highest levels of public office” for four decades and was never financially constrained while in office. It questioned how he could now be “destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones,” and suggested his reported financial difficulties demonstrated an inability to sustain himself outside the “patronage of public office.”
In the statement, the APC warned that Amaechi’s bid for the vice‑presidency in 2027 would amount to “leeching on public treasury” and described the presidency as “not a soup kitchen” for him. The party concluded that Amaechi’s own remarks about his mother’s death “speak louder than any speaker” regarding his alleged unfitness for the vice‑presidential office.
