Coogee and Maroubra beaches in Sydney’s eastern suburbs were closed to swimming and surfing after a whale carcass washed up on the rocks between the two popular spots on Thursday.

The 1.5‑kilometre stretch of coastline, known for its busy surf breaks, was declared unsafe as the remains of the marine mammal lay in a difficult-to-access area surrounded by cliffs and a rocky ledge.

Maroubra Council said it was working with rangers and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries to remove the carcass in a “culturally respectful” manner, prioritising the safety of beachgoers and the integrity of the site.

“We are coordinating with state authorities to ensure the removal is carried out with sensitivity and care,” a council spokesperson told the media. “The area is not easily reachable, so a specialised approach is required.”

Until the remains are cleared, the council has imposed a ban on swimming, diving and other water activities at both beaches to protect the public from potential health risks and to allow the removal team to work without interference.

The incident is the latest in a series of wildlife events that have prompted beach closures in the region, underscoring the need for rapid response and cooperation between local and state agencies.
