New Delhi Faces Dangerous Air Quality Days Before Diwali

New Delhi's residents are facing severe health concerns as the city's air quality has deteriorated to hazardous levels just days before the upcoming Diwali celebrations.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a widely celebrated Hindu festival in India. The festivities typically involve the use of fireworks, which contribute to the worsening air quality in the city.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the air quality index in New Delhi has reached dangerous levels, with particulate matter PM2.5 and PM10 levels soaring high.

  • PM2.5 stands for particles with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers or less, while PM10 refers to particles with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less.

Dr. Sumanth Rao, a senior air quality expert from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, commented on the situation:

"The air quality in New Delhi is alarming. The combination of stubble burning in the surrounding regions, vehicular emissions, and construction activities has led to such hazardous conditions."

The city's residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect their health during the festive season.

The Indian government has urged people to avoid stubble burning in the surrounding regions to minimize air pollution. Additionally, they have requested citizens to reduce outdoor activities and refrain from using personal vehicles on specific days to reduce vehicular emissions.

In an effort to address the issue, the Delhi government has deployed additional pollution control teams and increased monitoring of the situation.

As the festival approaches, it remains to be seen whether these measures will be effective in improving the city's air quality and ensuring a safe celebration for the residents.
