World Health Organization (WHO) Director‑General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus delivered opening remarks at a High‑Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response in New York on Thursday, addressing a gathering of senior United Nations officials and global health leaders.
In his address, Dr Tedros greeted the President of the UN General Assembly, Dr Khalilur Rahman, the President of ECOSOC, Amar Bendjama, Deputy Secretary‑General Amina Mohamed, former UN Deputy Secretary‑General and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honourable Helen Clark, and other distinguished participants.
The meeting, convened by the WHO, brings together member‑state representatives, UN bodies and civil‑society actors to review progress on pandemic preparedness and to strengthen coordinated response mechanisms following the COVID‑19 experience.
While the speech focused on the need for sustained political commitment, equitable access to health tools and robust surveillance systems, Dr Tedros emphasized that collective action remains essential to prevent future health emergencies.
Participants are expected to adopt a set of recommendations that will guide WHO’s strategic agenda on pandemic prevention and to mobilise resources for implementation across regions.
