In a new World Health Organization (WHO) report, it was revealed that one in every four adolescents worldwide failed to achieve the recommended minimum of 60 minutes of physical activity on any day during the previous week.

The WHO, which sets global health standards, recommends that children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 years engage in at least 60 minutes of moderate‑to‑vigorous physical activity daily. The report’s findings suggest that a significant proportion of young people are not meeting this guideline.

Physical inactivity among adolescents is a growing public health concern, linked to rising rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and mental health challenges. The report highlights the need for targeted interventions to encourage active lifestyles in this age group.

According to the study, the shortfall in activity levels points to gaps in access to safe play spaces, school-based physical education, and community programs that support regular exercise for young people.

The WHO will continue to monitor adolescent activity levels and urges governments, schools, and communities to implement strategies that promote daily physical activity for children and teenagers.
