Nigeria’s Super Eagles began their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.
The Eagles fell behind in the 16th minute when Emmanuel Kari converted Madagascar’s early opportunity to stun the home crowd.
Nigeria responded strongly but had to wait until first-half stoppage time to draw level, with Gift Ilenikhena firing home in the 46th minute after an assist from Alex Iwobi.
The hosts continued to dominate after the interval and completed the turnaround in the 65th minute when Moses Usor found the net, with Semi Ajayi providing the assist.
Madagascar struggled to create further openings as Nigeria controlled much of the second half and held on for all three points.
The statistics reflected Nigeria’s dominance, with the Eagles enjoying 54.7 per cent possession and recording 22 shots against Madagascar’s four.
Nigeria also registered four shots on target, compared with Madagascar’s one, while the Eagles had 35 touches inside the opposition penalty area to the visitors’ six.
The result gives Nigeria three points from their opening Group L fixture as the Eagles begin their campaign for a place at the 2027 AFCON.
