The Osun State Government has been slammed for its poor fiscal management after the state was ranked 32nd out of 35 in BudgIT’s 2026 State of States assessment. The civic‑technology organisation’s report, released on Thursday, placed Lagos, Enugu and Bayelsa at the top of the list, while Cross River fell to the bottom.

In a statement, the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) criticised the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke, saying the low ranking reflected a lack of a clear economic development strategy and ineffective use of public resources. State chairman Dr Tosin Odeyemi said the assessment confirmed the party’s long‑standing view that the governor “has no economic blueprint for Osun.”

Odeyemi also highlighted that states such as Kebbi, Jigawa and Katsina, which rank in the top ten, manage their resources more prudently than Osun. “While states like Kebbi, Jigawa and Katsina are managing their resources prudently and ranking in the top 10, Osun, with all its potential, is ranked 32nd,” he said.

“How can a state that claims to be spending billions on paper be ranked among the worst in fiscal performance? It shows the government is only good at propaganda while the state’s economy is in shambles,” Odeyemi added.

The opposition also raised concerns about Osun’s internally generated revenue, accusing the government of relying almost entirely on allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). “The table does not lie. It shows that Osun is being run on FAAC allocation alone with no effort to grow the Internally Generated Revenue,” the DLA statement read.

In response, the DLA urged Governor Adeleke to introduce measures to improve the state’s economy, plug financial leakages and direct public funds toward productive sectors rather than “frivolous activities.” The party called on Osun residents to demand greater accountability in the management of public resources, insisting that the BudgIT assessment should prompt the state government to address the financial and economic challenges highlighted by the ranking.
