Dozens of prominent actors and writers have issued a joint statement condemning a new UK anti-terrorism law that targets the group Palestine Action, describing the legislation as a “repressive absurdity.” The signatories, who include leading figures from the literary and performing arts communities, specifically highlighted the impact of the law on author Sally Rooney, who is associated with the cause.
The statement criticizes the UK government’s decision to ban Palestine Action, arguing that the measure represents an overreach of state power against political dissent. By labeling the group under anti-terror statutes, the authorities have effectively criminalized activities that the signatories view as legitimate political expression.
Sally Rooney, the acclaimed novelist, is named in the context of the controversy, with the writers and actors expressing solidarity with her and other individuals affected by the ban. The collective argues that the law serves to silence voices critical of state policy rather than addressing genuine security threats.
The term “repressive absurdity” was used to characterize the legal framework, suggesting that the application of counter-terrorism measures to this specific group is disproportionate and logically flawed. The signatories contend that such actions undermine democratic freedoms and set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of political activists in the United Kingdom.
This condemnation marks a significant instance of high-profile cultural figures uniting to challenge domestic security legislation. The statement underscores a growing tension between government security priorities and the perceived erosion of civil liberties, particularly regarding issues related to the Palestinian cause.
