Security agencies in Abia State convened a strategic meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office in Umuahia on Thursday to plan the protection of INEC staff, election materials and the overall conduct of the 2027 general elections in the state.

The gathering was led by Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, CP Wilfred Afolabi, and included heads of the state’s sister security agencies as well as the State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Participants discussed the deployment of security personnel, safe escort of ballot boxes and other election paraphernalia, and an analysis of potential threats that could jeopardise a smooth voting process.

In a statement signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Maureen Chinaka, the Abia State Police Command pledged to work in synergy with other security bodies to safeguard electoral officials and maintain a peaceful environment throughout the election period. “The meeting also emphasized the need for robust security arrangements at INEC offices and other critical locations to safeguard the electoral process,” Chinaka said.

Chinaka added that the discussion reinforced the importance of implementing the Inspector‑General of Police’s directives on electoral security, underscoring the commitment of state authorities to uphold the integrity of the upcoming polls.

Abia State, located in southeastern Nigeria, will be one of the 36 states participating in the nationwide 2027 elections, a process that has historically required heightened security measures to ensure free and fair voting.
