The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC) says that roughly 55,000 inmates are currently awaiting trial in Nigeria, a situation it attributes to prolonged detention periods and the high cost of legal services.

All of the individuals counted are being held in pre‑trial detention, meaning they have not yet been convicted of a crime but remain incarcerated while their cases move through the courts.

According to the PPDC, many of these detainees remain in custody for extended periods because court proceedings are delayed and many cannot afford the fees required to secure legal representation.

Nigeria’s prison system is already under strain, with many facilities operating beyond their intended capacity. The large number of awaiting‑trial prisoners adds further pressure to an already overcrowded correctional environment.

The centre’s findings highlight ongoing challenges in the country’s criminal‑justice system, including backlogs in case processing and limited access to affordable legal aid, which together contribute to the growing pre‑trial population.

PPDC officials have called for reforms aimed at speeding up judicial processes and reducing the financial barriers to legal counsel, in order to alleviate the burden on inmates and the prison system alike.
