In a Thursday media briefing in Abuja, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, publicly rebuked Rotimi Amaechi, the presidential running mate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), for involving his wife and mother in national politics.
Wike said Amaechi had claimed he would have distanced himself from his wife if she were to become president, a statement that the minister found “irresponsible.” He questioned why Amaechi would bring his wife into the political arena, adding that “an innocent woman should not be used in this way.”
“Why do you have to bring your wife now into politics? The last time you brought in your mother, that was the policy of the president that killed your mother and I saw the reactions of people,” Wike said.
He went on to ask whether Amaechi had ever been given a contract at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and why he continued to involve his wife in political matters. Wike also questioned why Amaechi had not divorced his wife, suggesting that “why always bring out your wife, why didn’t you divorce your wife then?”
Wike’s comments add to the growing scrutiny of the ADC’s campaign strategy, as the party prepares for the 2027 presidential election. The remarks were made during the minister’s routine monthly media chat, a forum that often features candid discussions on national political developments.
