In a move that has rattled the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State, senatorial aspirant Sani Ahmed Shinkafi has formally rejected the party’s primary election for the Zamfara North seat, alleging widespread irregularities.
Shinkafi said the primary produced conflicting results: the committee chairman announced Senator Sahabi Alhaji Ya’u Kaura as the winner, while another committee member declared Senator Tijjani Yahaya Kaura the victor. He denied having reached any consensus arrangement with either candidate or any other aspirant before the election.
According to Shinkafi, the exercise violated the APC primary election guidelines and the Electoral Act 2026, and he argued that no credible voting process was conducted. He has called on the APC National Chairman, the National Working Committee (NWC) and the National Election Appeals Committee to nullify the disputed primary.
Shinkafi also urged the party not to submit either of the contested candidates’ names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He demanded a fresh, direct primary across the four local government areas of Zamfara North, with INEC monitoring and a duly authorised committee appointed by the NWC to conduct the exercise.
Should the party fail to address his complaints, Shinkafi threatened legal action against Senators Sahabi Ya’u Kaura and Tijjani Yahaya Kaura. The dispute highlights the intense competition within the APC for the upcoming senatorial elections in the north‑western state.
