Former Senate President and ex‑Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, has called for a rotational transfer of the Nigerian presidency, proposing that after President Bola Tinubu’s second term the office should move to the North and then to the South‑East. The comments were made in an interview with Arise News ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Certainly, the President has taken it from the Southwest and is entitled to a second term. After his second term, I believe in rotation, and it will go to the North. After the North, it will come down to the East after eight years,” Anyim said, outlining a sequence he sees as consistent with Nigeria’s principle of rotational presidency.
Anyim stressed that the South‑East must build alliances with other regions to realise its presidential ambitions. “You need to support others so that they can support you,” he said, adding that political parties should act “like a family with a common understanding and objective.”
He also highlighted the importance of foundational democratic values. “When you talk about democracy and nation‑building, you should be talking about principles, institutions, fundamental objectives, liberty of the individual, rights of citizens, justice, inclusivity, and the rule of law,” he said.
Speaking on the future of the South‑East, Anyim said his concern is “to ensure that future generations in the South‑East have a stronger sense of belonging and access to opportunities.”
On former Anambra governor Peter Obi, Anyim expressed respect but clarified he would not endorse Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign because they belong to different political camps. “Peter is my friend and my brother, and I respect him,” he said, adding that the APC still has “every reason and ground to make its own impact in the Southeast.”
