The All Progressives Congress (APC) warned Nigerians on Thursday, via a statement posted on its verified X account, that former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar should be kept away from the presidency in the 2027 election, describing him as “a danger to Nigeria.”
The party said there are “numerous reports” linking Atiku to both local and international bribery and corruption schemes, and argued that his record mirrors “some of Nigeria’s episodes of corruption that destroyed the nation’s economy and decimated public trust.” Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has long struggled with corruption scandals that erode confidence in public institutions.
In its statement, the APC cited a series of controversies it says involve Atiku, including:
- The Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project
- The Siemens bribery scandal
- The William Jefferson case
- The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) funds controversy
- A U.S. Senate investigation into suspicious financial transactions
- A 2003 payment of $500,000 made by Leno Adesanya, promoter of Sunrise Power, to Jennifer Douglas (Atiku’s wife at the time) through an offshore company, examined by an International Chamber of Commerce Arbitration Tribunal in Paris
“Atiku is a danger to Nigeria. Nigerians must keep him away from the national treasury. Ghosts of his sordid past continue, restlessly, to haunt him. He must never again be allowed anywhere close to such a commanding position of trust and responsibility as the presidency.”
The APC concluded that the 2027 polls present “another opportunity for Nigerians to deal with Atiku’s desperate quest for presidential power and save the country from plunder,” urging voters to reject the former vice‑president and protect the nation’s finances.
