Governor Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate of the Action Peoples Movement (APM), pledged on Tuesday in Katsina that, if elected president in 2027, he will transmit power to the Vice President whenever he is on vacation or otherwise unavailable, promising to obey Section 145 of the Nigerian Constitution “to the letter.”
Makinde said the pledge mirrors the constitutional requirement that a president submit a written declaration to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives when proceeding on leave. He noted that, as governor of Oyo State, he already transfers authority to his deputy when travelling for more than 21 days for non‑official reasons.
Addressing the APM North‑West town meeting, Makinde outlined a “Reset Agenda” for the economy, education, security and the political system. He called for an economy that can sustain intensive, round‑the‑clock production, stressing that natural resources alone are insufficient without skills and knowledge. In education, he promised to compile reliable data on out‑of‑school children and develop measures to return them to school. He also advocated removing mining from the Exclusive Legislative List and devolving it to the states, with the federal government retaining oversight.
“Is it their fault that they were born in Nigeria? Is it their fault that they were looking for means of surviving? No, sir. The answer is no,” Makinde said, referring to the recent deaths of 37 young people in Niger State.
Makinde condemned the focus on the supply side of illegal mining, urging attention to the demand side as well. He urged Nigerians to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards and vote in the 2027 election, asserting the contest will be “APC versus Nigerians.” APM vice‑presidential candidate Lawal Daura echoed the call for change in the North‑West, highlighting insecurity and poverty as priority issues and describing Makinde as “young, active and pragmatic.” Both candidates said detailed policy proposals will be unveiled as the campaign progresses.
