Sam Amadi, a former chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its bid to retain power, describing the prospect of the party ruling Nigeria for 16 consecutive years as “large-scale foolishness.”

In a post on X on Monday, Amadi argued that the APC, which governed the country for eight years under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is now seeking to secure another eight-year tenure under President Bola Tinubu. He stated that if this sequence of events materializes, it would reflect either a significant lack of judgment or a flawed political economy.

“The party that gave us Buhari for eight years wants to give us Tinubu for eight years. If it works, it shows large-scale foolishness or a terrible election political economy, as The Economist hinted,” Amadi said.

The former NERC chairman’s remarks highlight growing scrutiny regarding the APC’s strategy to maintain its administrative hold beyond the current term. By framing the potential 16-year stretch as a systemic issue, Amadi suggests that the continuity of leadership may indicate deeper structural problems within Nigeria’s electoral landscape.

His comments arrive at a time when political parties and aspirants are intensifying their preparations for the 2027 general election. The APC is actively pushing for the continuation of its administration, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters who view the extended tenure as detrimental to democratic rotation.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, the debate over the APC’s longevity in power remains a central point of contention in Nigerian political discourse, with figures like Amadi urging a reevaluation of the party’s dominance.
