In a joint statement issued this week, the Nigerian Bishops called on the nation to intensify prayers and fasting in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

“As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, we are called to intensify our prayers so that the elections may be free, fair, credible and peaceful,” the bishops said, announcing a national prayer and fasting program aimed at fostering a peaceful electoral process.

The appeal comes ahead of the country’s scheduled elections, which will determine the next federal and state leadership. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, has a history of electoral tensions, making the bishops’ call for a calm and transparent vote particularly resonant.

While the bishops did not outline specific dates for the prayer and fasting activities, they urged all Christians across the country to join in collective spiritual preparation for the upcoming polls.

“We are called to intensify our prayers so that the elections may be free, fair, credible and peaceful,” the bishops added.
