- Sir Bobby Charlton – England legend served in the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and represented the British Army football team before winning the 1966 World Cup.

- Paolo Maldini – The Italy and AC Milan icon completed compulsory military service in the Italian Army.
- Fabio Cannavaro – The former Italy captain served in the Italian military between 1995 and 1996 before captaining Italy to the 2006 World Cup.
- Gary Holt – The Scotland international served in the Army Catering Corps and played for the British Army football team before a career with Norwich City and Kilmarnock.
- Teemu Tainio – The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder completed service in the Finnish Defence Forces before playing in France and England.
- Bruce Grobbelaar – The Liverpool goalkeeper was conscripted into the Rhodesian Army in 1975 and served during the Rhodesian Bush War.
- Gordon Astall – The England international served in the Royal Marines during World War II before representing England at the international level.
Military service has long been a rite of passage in many countries, often instilling discipline, resilience and teamwork that translate onto the pitch. These stories remind us that the path to football stardom can sometimes begin with a uniform.
