Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has begun talks with Canadian educational institutions to secure scholarship opportunities for the state’s students, according to a statement from his spokesman, Dauda Iliya.

The initiative, announced from Maiduguri, aims to strengthen Borno’s human‑capital base and diversify its economy by linking local talent with academic and vocational programmes abroad. Zulum will visit Canada to meet representatives from leading universities, technology hubs and agricultural research institutions.

“During his stay in Canada, Governor Zulum is scheduled to meet with representatives from leading Canadian universities, tech hubs, and agricultural research institutions,” Iliya said.

The governor’s agenda will focus on education, skills development, agriculture, livestock, technology and investment. He is also seeking technical support, knowledge transfer and foreign direct investment for the state.

Part of the discussions will explore vocational training programmes that match contemporary labour‑market demands and partnerships with Canadian technology firms to promote digital literacy and establish innovation hubs in Maiduguri.

These engagements are expected to broaden opportunities for Borno students while fostering partnerships that can support the state’s economic and technological development.
