Prince Emmanuel Kanu, the youngest brother and spokesperson for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has marked the 59th birthday of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu with a statement describing him as an “unbreakable lion.” In the message issued from Abuja, Prince Emmanuel emphasized that his brother remains undefeated despite years of incarceration, framing Kanu’s ongoing legal struggles as evidence of his resilience.
“They jailed you with a dead law, yet you are still undefeated, still forcing the government to face Appeal,” Prince Emmanuel stated. “They thought they buried you, they didn’t know you were a seed.” He further referred to Kanu as “The Great Masquerade,” a title he said reflects the IPOB leader’s endurance through prolonged legal proceedings.
Nnamdi Kanu, born on September 25, 1967, leads the proscribed separatist group that agitates for the secession of Nigeria’s South-East Region under the name “Biafra.” He has been in detention since his controversial rendition to Nigeria in June 2021, where he faces terrorism-related charges before the Federal High Court.
The case has drawn sustained attention from Kanu’s supporters, human rights groups, and sections of the international community. The trial has featured multiple rulings and appeals, including proceedings before the Court of Appeal.
