WhatsApp has warned that Android smartphones running versions older than Android 6.0 will soon be unable to access the messaging service, meaning users with such devices may lose the app entirely unless they upgrade.
The company said the platform also requires a phone that can receive SMS messages or voice calls, as these are essential for the WhatsApp account verification process.
According to the announcement, WhatsApp regularly phases out support for older operating systems to keep pace with technological advances and to maintain the security and functionality of the app. By retiring legacy OS versions, the service can focus development resources on newer systems.
Users whose devices no longer meet the requirements will receive notifications from WhatsApp, and the company said it will send multiple reminders urging affected users to upgrade their phones so they can continue using the service.
WhatsApp added that it will keep updating its support criteria as needed, and advised Android users to check their device’s operating‑system version to confirm compatibility. In Africa, where Android powers the majority of smartphones, the change could impact a sizable number of users still on older handsets.
