Chief Ganiyu Kola Egunjobi and Barrister Azeez Yusuf have rejected their expulsion from the All Progressives Congress (APC) by the Lagos State chapter, asserting that they had already formally resigned from the party in July 2026. The duo, who subsequently joined the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), described the party’s decision announced on September 23 as belated and politically unnecessary.
In a joint statement, Egunjobi and Yusuf stated that their resignation and defection were publicly communicated weeks before the APC announced their purported expulsion. “For the avoidance of doubt, we resigned from the APC in July 2026, weeks before the Party announced our purported expulsion on September 23,” they said, questioning the rationale behind expelling members who had already left.
The former APC members cited unresolved grievances over the party’s primary elections as the primary reason for their departure. They alleged that they won the primaries in their respective constituencies but were denied the opportunity to proceed as the party’s candidates. Despite making several attempts to resolve the matter internally through petitions, representations, and press conferences, they claimed their concerns were not meaningfully addressed by the party leadership.
“Unfortunately, our concerns were not meaningfully addressed. There was no genuine engagement, no satisfactory resolution and no meaningful effort to restore confidence in the process,” the statement read.
Describing the expulsion announcement as an attempt to “rewrite a political history that had already moved on,” Egunjobi and Yusuf raised concerns regarding internal democracy and due process. They characterized the action as a “disturbing manifestation of political impunity” intended to create the impression that their departure was forced upon them. The duo defended their move to the APM by citing the political trajectories of other prominent figures, including Senator Musiliu Obanikoro and Dr Wale Ahmed, who have operated under different party platforms.
While insisting they would not be intimidated by the development, the two politicians declared their continued support for President Bola Tinubu, Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Senator Idiat Adebule, and Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudasiru Obasa. They emphasized that leaving the APC did not mean abandoning their political principles or relationships, noting that they are currently working for the success of the Tinubu/Hamzat political project in Agege.
Egunjobi and Yusuf urged their supporters to remain calm and focused as they pursue their political aspirations under the APM platform. They stated that their attention would remain on the welfare of their constituents in Agege and the broader development of Lagos State, concluding that their message is simple: they resigned, they moved on, and they remain focused on the political future ahead.
