Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney has released the official trailer for his upcoming feature, Musk, a film that has already drawn significant controversy and threats of a defamation lawsuit from its subject, Elon Musk. The release comes after rumors suggested Universal Pictures was reconsidering its international theatrical distribution plans following the film's debut at the Venice International Film Festival two weeks ago.
Despite the earlier speculation, the film remains on track for a US theatrical release, with domestic distributor Bleecker Street Media handling the rollout. The new trailer provides the first official look at Gibney's portrayal of the technology executive, adding fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the documentary's perspective.
Gibney is a veteran of the documentary genre, having produced films since the 1980s. His extensive body of work covers a wide array of subjects, including Jimi Hendrix, Hunter S. Thompson, WikiLeaks, Scientology, Steve Jobs, Elizabeth Holmes, Boris Becker, and David Chase. He has also explored major societal and political issues, such as alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election, the opioid epidemic, and the career of cyclist Lance Armstrong.
The filmmaker achieved significant critical acclaim with his 2005 documentary Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, which earned him his first Academy Award nomination. He subsequently won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature in 2007 for Taxi to the Dark Side, cementing his reputation for tackling controversial and high-profile topics.
In addition to Musk, Gibney has another forthcoming documentary titled You Can See Everything, which focuses on Elizabeth Holmes and features comedian Nathan Fielder. The release of the Musk trailer marks a key moment in the film's journey from festival premiere to wide audience release.
