From 1 November 2026, coins issued in the 1958 series will be withdrawn from circulation across Central Africa, marking a historic shift in the region’s monetary landscape.
The decision, announced by the relevant monetary authorities, will see the phased removal of these older denominations from everyday use. It is part of a broader effort to modernise the region’s coinage and streamline cash transactions.
While the exact range of coins to be retired is not detailed in the brief, the move is expected to affect a significant portion of the 1958 issue, which has long been a staple of Central African currency.
Officials say the withdrawal will be implemented in a controlled manner, with replacement coins and banknotes already in the design phase to ensure a smooth transition for consumers and businesses alike.
