Michael van Gerwen’s difficult season worsened on Saturday night when the Dutch world champion was eliminated in his opening match of the Swiss Darts Trophy, losing 6‑4 to Austria’s Mensur Suljovic.
The defeat came in the first round of the tournament, marking an early exit for van Gerwen and adding to what has been described as a “nightmare year” for the three‑time world champion.
Suljovic secured the victory by winning six legs to van Gerwen’s four, ending the match without the need for a deciding leg.
For van Gerwen, the loss means his campaign in the Swiss Darts Trophy is over, leaving him with no opportunity to earn ranking points or prize money from the event.
Suljovic, meanwhile, advances to the next round of the competition, where he will face a new opponent in the continuing European Tour schedule.
