The United States women’s national team (USWNT) fell 2‑0 to reigning world champions Spain on Saturday, a result that left coach Emma Hayes “frustrated” but “not deterred,” according to her post‑match remarks.
Hayes highlighted the team’s inability to find the back of the net, noting that the lack of goalscoring was the most glaring issue in a game where Spain’s defense held firm.
Despite the defeat, Hayes said she saw “signs of progress” in the squad’s performance and emphasized that the loss would not derail preparations for next year’s World Cup.
The USWNT, a perennial powerhouse in women’s soccer, will now turn its focus to refining its attack and building cohesion ahead of the tournament that begins in 2025.
Hayes and her staff plan to use the experience against Spain as a learning opportunity, with upcoming friendlies and training camps designed to address the offensive shortcomings revealed in the match.
