The United States has announced its support for Elon Musk’s attempt to overturn a €120 million fine imposed by the European Union on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.
The fine was levied after the EU concluded that X had “deceived users” by selling blue‑tick verification badges without “meaningfully verifying” the accounts that received them.
“X deceives users by selling blue ticks without meaningfully verifying accounts,” the EU said.
Musk, who acquired X in 2022, has challenged the penalty, arguing that the platform’s verification system is not a misleading paid service. The EU’s decision is part of a broader regulatory push to hold social‑media companies accountable for user safety and transparency.
While the fine remains in place, the U.S. backing signals a growing alignment between the American tech industry and Musk’s efforts to contest European regulatory actions.
