Innocent Ondoa Nkou, a former deputy director general of Cameroon’s Banque Internationale du Cameroun pour l’Épargne et le Crédit (BICEC), was found dead at his home in Fifinda on the morning of Thursday, 5 November 2022. According to multiple sources, the former banking executive and traditional chief was killed with a machete by unknown assailants.

Ondoa Nkou, also known as “Sa Majesté,” served as the senior traditional leader of the Evouzok‑Ewondo community in Fifinda, a town in the Lokoundjé district of the South Region, not far from the coastal city of Kribi. In addition to his customary role, he held political office, having served as a mayor in the region.

His career at BICEC was marked by controversy. In August 2016 he was arrested and later detained at the central prison in Douala as part of a large‑scale investigation into alleged embezzlement of more than 50 billion CFA francs, an inquiry that implicated several senior bank officials.

The exact circumstances surrounding the murder remain unclear. Police have launched an investigation to determine how the attack was carried out, identify the perpetrators and ascertain whether any individuals or groups were behind the killing.

Cameroon’s South Region, where the crime occurred, has seen a rise in violent incidents in recent years, prompting authorities to increase security measures. BICEL, one of the country’s leading commercial banks, has not commented publicly on the case.
