President Tinubu calls for a shift in Africa’s mineral trade at UNGA81
During the 81st UN General Assembly, Nigerian President Bola Tinubu urged African states to stop exporting raw mineral resources and instead focus on local processing and value‑adding activities.
In a speech to the assembly, Tinubu appealed for continental unity on the issue, arguing that the continued export of unprocessed minerals limits economic growth and perpetuates dependence on foreign companies.
He highlighted the need for African nations to develop domestic industries capable of turning raw materials into finished products, a move that could create jobs and increase revenue for the continent.
Tinubu’s remarks come amid growing calls across Africa for greater control over the supply chains of minerals such as gold, diamonds and iron ore, which have long been a source of revenue for external investors.
“We must unite to end the export of raw mineral resources and focus on local processing and value addition,” Tinubu said.
