The United Kingdom will reopen its refugee resettlement scheme, Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood announced, aiming to provide safe and legal routes for vulnerable people seeking protection.
The decision follows the government’s effort to expand options for asylum seekers who might otherwise resort to dangerous journeys or irregular migration channels.
Mahmood said the revived scheme is intended to create a “safe and legal” pathway, allowing those at risk to be transferred directly to the UK under controlled conditions.
Resettlement programmes have historically enabled the United Kingdom to admit refugees identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other partners, offering them protection and support upon arrival.
The move is part of a broader strategy to manage migration more responsibly, reducing reliance on people‑smuggling networks and ensuring that vulnerable individuals receive assistance in accordance with international obligations.
