Uganda has halted all military and defence cooperation with Turkey after Ankara refused to extradite an exiled Ugandan blogger who is a fierce critic of President Yoweri Museveni. The move follows months of diplomatic tension over the blogger’s status and the Ugandan government’s demand for his return to face charges.
The Ugandan government said the decision was a direct response to Turkey’s refusal to comply with its extradition request. The blogger, who has been living abroad since 2021, has been accused by authorities of spreading “anti-government propaganda” and is believed to be in Turkey at the time of the request.
In a statement, Uganda’s foreign ministry described the suspension as a “necessary step to protect national security and uphold the rule of law.” The ministry also warned that any future cooperation with Turkey would be reassessed once the extradition issue is resolved.
Turkey has not yet issued a formal response to the Ugandan government’s announcement. The extradition dispute has drawn attention from international human rights groups, which have called for a fair legal process for the blogger.
Both countries have maintained that the situation remains a matter of diplomatic negotiation, with no immediate plans to resume military ties until the extradition matter is settled.
