Uganda: Kampala Mayor Urges President to Suspend Garbage Dumping Ban
Kampala, Uganda - Kampala Lord Mayor, Ronald Balimwezo, has petitioned President Yoweri Museveni to pause his directive preventing the disposal of garbage at the Buyala Waste Management Facility in Mpigi District. Balimwezo's plea comes amid concerns that the directive could exacerbate waste accumulation in Kampala and escalate the risk of flooding during the anticipated September-December rainy season.
In a recent interview with Nile Post, Balimwezo stated, "I urge President Museveni to reconsider the directive, as it could lead to an increase in the volume of waste being generated within the city, ultimately resulting in more frequent and severe flooding events during the rainy season."
The Buyala Waste Management Facility, located in Mpigi District, has been a crucial component in managing waste generated within Kampala, Uganda's capital city, for several years. Balimwezo emphasized the importance of this facility in maintaining public health and sanitation.
"The Buyala Waste Management Facility plays a vital role in ensuring the cleanliness and health of our city. By suspending the directive, we can prevent a potential public health crisis and minimize the risk of severe flooding," Balimwezo explained.
The Mayor's call for a temporary suspension of the directive comes as the city grapples with an increased volume of waste, primarily due to rapid urbanization and population growth. Balimwezo expressed concern that the directive could exacerbate the current waste management challenges in Kampala.
"The directive has resulted in an influx of waste being dumped in unauthorized locations, which has led to unhygienic conditions and potential health hazards in our city," Balimwezo warned.
Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni had issued the directive in May, aiming to protect the Buyala wetland ecosystem. Museveni's directive prevents waste disposal at the facility until further notice, citing the need to safeguard the environment and local biodiversity.
"The directive is an effort to safeguard our environment and the biodiversity of the Buyala wetland," Museveni stated in a recent press release.
If implemented, Balimwezo's request for a temporary suspension of the directive could have significant implications for both waste management and environmental protection in Kampala and the surrounding areas.
