Two miners were killed in a fresh attack on the night of Wednesday in the Gangare community of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State. The incident has added to growing concerns about the safety of miners and residents in rural parts of the state.
Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), described the event as “sad and unfortunate.” He said the miners were carrying out their normal activities when they were killed and urged security forces to investigate, pursue those responsible and bring any culprits to justice.
Security forces in the region have been on heightened alert amid renewed tensions in parts of Plateau State. The attack comes as the state’s security agencies continue to address threats to civilians and the mining sector.
In a separate operation, troops of Sector 5, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), in Bokkos Local Government Area, foiled a kidnapping attempt on the Sha‑Daffo road on September 22 at about 9:40 p.m. The troops responded to a distress report and forced the suspected kidnappers to abandon their plan and flee.
Three victims were rescued: 42‑year‑old Haruna Rabiu, 25‑year‑old Mary Joseph and 29‑year‑old Bridget Gideon. They sustained minor injuries and were taken to a hospital for treatment.
“We appeal to citizens to remain calm and support the security agencies with timely information,” said Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, spokesman for OPEP. “Deliberate efforts had been made to deny criminal elements freedom of action within the OPEP Joint Operations Area. Security forces had commenced efforts to track and apprehend the fleeing suspects.”
Oteh added that the operation was part of ongoing efforts by troops under OPEP to disrupt criminal activities and protect communities and road users across Plateau State.
