President Donald Trump signed a security agreement with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark on Tuesday, during a side event at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Speaking at the ceremony, Trump described the pact as “a long‑term, fantastic relationship” and called the deal “tremendous.”
The signing comes after the president’s earlier public statements urging the United States to gain control over Greenland, an autonomous territory that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Greenland, the world’s largest island, enjoys self‑government while remaining under Danish sovereignty, and Denmark is a longstanding member of NATO.
Details of the security arrangement were not disclosed, but the three parties indicated that the agreement would deepen cooperation on defense and related matters.
