The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has published a new report that outlines a series of proposals intended to boost the sport of cycling and improve rider safety. Among the ideas highlighted are the introduction of transfer windows for professional cyclists and the deployment of drones during races.
The report suggests that a regulated transfer window – a set period during which riders may change teams – could bring greater stability to team rosters and provide clearer timelines for contract negotiations.
Another recommendation calls for the use of drones to monitor race routes in real time. Proponents argue that aerial footage could help officials spot hazards more quickly and enhance overall safety for competitors and spectators.
While the transfer‑window and drone concepts are given particular attention, the UCI notes that they are part of a broader set of reforms aimed at modernising the sport, strengthening competition and addressing safety concerns that have been raised in recent years.
The governing body says the proposals will be discussed with national federations, teams and riders in the coming months, with any changes to be implemented only after consensus is reached.
