President Bola Tinubu has urged the West African College of Physicians to devise solutions to the exodus of doctors from Nigeria and other West African states.
The call was made by the president at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, coinciding with the college’s golden jubilee and its annual general and scientific meeting.
Assistant Secretary‑General Hasibu Galadanci relayed Tinubu’s directive, noting the urgent need to tackle the so‑called “Japa” syndrome – the trend of medical professionals leaving the region for better opportunities abroad.
In a sector where brain drain has become a growing concern, the college is expected to develop strategies to improve working conditions and retain talent across West Africa.
With Nigeria being one of the largest contributors of medical staff to other countries, the president’s appeal comes at a time when the healthcare sector is under pressure to address workforce shortages and maintain quality of care.
