Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to continue his official duties while abroad, responding to criticism that the president missed the opening of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. Lawal made the comments during an interview on Channels Television’s programme “Inside Sources.”
According to the governor, Tinubu travelled on a “working leave,” a term the president used to indicate that he would remain engaged in government business despite being outside Nigeria. “When the President travelled, he made it very clear that he was going on a working leave. Wherever the President is, he is working for Nigeria,” Lawal said.
Lawal added that advances in technology now allow public officials to perform their responsibilities from any location. “Nigeria is evolving, and the President can work anywhere. That is why we are investing so much in technology, to be able to work wherever you are,” he explained.
He dismissed concerns that the president’s remote work was controversial, emphasizing that Tinubu was not merely taking time off. “I don’t see that to be any controversial because he is not just resting, he is working for Nigeria,” Lawal said.
Lawal’s remarks come as Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, seeks to modernise its public sector through digital tools and remote‑working capabilities, a trend he says should be embraced across government institutions.
